What to Expect

Our journey begins in the picturesque steppe near Ugii Lake, where we can leisurely stroll along the tranquil shores and even learn the art of horse riding. From there, we venture into the historic Orkhon Valley, immersing ourselves in the remnants of Kharkhorin (Karakorum), the ancient capital of the Great Mongol Empire. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Mongolia’s rich history.

The highlight of our trip awaits as we embark on a four-day trekking expedition with pack horses to the breathtaking Huisiin Naiman Lake. This remarkable cluster of lakes, including Shireet, Khaliut, Bugat, Khaya, Khuis, Onon, Doroo, Bayan-Uul, is nestled amidst the captivating landscapes of the Khangai Mountain range. The pristine lakes, interconnected by subterranean channels, offer a unique and enchanting experience.

Our adventure concludes as we reach the enchanting dunes of the small Gobi Desert, where an air of tranquility and desert solitude surrounds us. It’s the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in the desert’s serene atmosphere and create lasting memories with our loved ones.

DAY 1.Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for a relaxing stay. Embark on a city tour that includes visits to significant landmarks such as the Gandan Monastery, where you can witness local prayers, observe monks, and marvel at the largest indoor Buddha statue. Explore the National Museum of Mongolia, which showcases the country’s rich cultural heritage spanning from the Stone Age to the present day. Finally, visit Sukhbaatar Square, also known as Chingis Khaan Square, a central gathering point of historical and cultural importance. Enjoy the tour and indulge in a delightful lunch/dinner.

DAY 2.Lake Ugii

  • On Day 2, you will head to Ugii Lake in the morning. The road leading to the lake is smoothly paved, but for the last 90 km, you will drive on a dirt road. Ugii Lake is a picturesque destination where you can unwind after a long drive. The lake is known for its abundant birdlife, with more than 150 bird species residing in the area. You can enjoy bird watching and fishing as part of the available entertainment options.

    During your visit to Ugii Lake, you will have the opportunity to explore the lifestyle of a local nomadic family and learn about their livestock farming practices. This experience will also provide you with your first exposure to staying in a traditional Mongolian ger, a portable dwelling commonly used by nomads in Mongolia.

    You will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and dinner during your stay at Ugii Lake (B/L/D).

DAY 3.Erdene Zuu Monastery in Kharkhorin

On Day 3, you will drive to Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of Mongolia during the time of the Mongol Empire. Although there is little left of this once great capital, you will discover the remnants of its glorious past. In 1586, under the rule of King Avtai Sain, the Erdene-Zuu Monastery was built on the site of the ancient ruins of Kharkhorin. The monastery, whose name means “Hundred Treasures,” contains various Buddhist statues, works of art, religious instruments, and even Tsam religious dance masks, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Mongolia.

Despite being destroyed during the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, the Erdene-Zuu Monastery still retains its historical significance. The monastery is surrounded by an impressive collection of 108 stupas, creating a remarkable sight for visitors.

During your visit to Kharkhorin, you will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and dinner (B/L/D).

DAY 4.Tuvkhun Monastery

On Day 4, you will drive to the Tuvkhun Monastery, located on top of Shiveet Mountain. This sacred site holds great historical and cultural significance in Mongolia. It is here that Zanabazar, the head and founder of Mongolian Buddhism, created his renowned artworks, including the national script “soyombo,” during the 16th century.

The Tuvkhun Monastery has been recognized as a “world’s precious heritage” by UNESCO, highlighting its importance and unique value. As you explore the monastery, you will have the opportunity to witness its architectural beauty and learn about its historical significance.

Surrounding the monastery, you will also find symbolic rock formations known as the “Mother womb,” stone scripts, and caves, adding to the mystical and enchanting atmosphere of the area.

Throughout the day, you will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and dinner (B/L/D).

DAY 5.Orkhon Waterfall

On Day 5, you will journey to the magnificent Orkhon Waterfall, also known as Ulaantsutgalan Waterfall. This natural wonder was formed by volcanic eruptions approximately 20,000 years ago and boasts a stunning cascade from a height of 20 meters.

The waterfall is located in a picturesque and tranquil spot, surrounded by undisturbed nature. This provides an excellent opportunity for leisurely walks and horseback riding, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the area.

After enjoying the scenic surroundings and exploring the waterfall, you will have the unique experience of staying overnight in traditional gers (Mongolian yurts) beside a nomadic family. This will give you a firsthand insight into their nomadic lifestyle and provide a cultural exchange that is truly authentic.

Throughout the day, you will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and dinner (B/L/D).

DAY 6.Trekking & Horse Riding Day to Shavart Valley

It’s the beginning of our easy three-day trek; we will leave our vehicle behind, and further horses will support our team. A passageway through a green valley and we walk down to the place of our tent. (B/L/D)

DAYS 7-8.Trekking & Horse Riding Days

Now trekking through Orkhon valley until we reach the magnificent Huisiin Naiman Nuur Lake, which means “The eight lakes of the Navel”. The lake is surrounded by extinct volcanoes. The altitude is 2500m high. We meet herders of yak, horse, and sheep, and we stop in nomad family. 

Huisiin Naiman Nuur is a beautiful lake that was created by volcanic eruptions centuries ago, covers 11,500 hectares around the lake located in Uvurkhangai Province to the southwest of the Khangai Mountain Range. Naiman Nuur with its exceptional configuration is surrounded by the beautiful nature of the middle part of the Khangai Mountain. These lakes with fresh water and interconnected by groundwater channels such as Shireet, Khaliut, Bugat, Khaya, Khuis, Onon, Doroo, Bayan-Uul are called Huisiin Naiman Nuur. These lakes located at 500m to 3km from each other. It was placed under state protection in 1992. (B/L/D)

DAY 9.Enjoyable Day at the Lake

DAY 10.Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes

Drive to Elsen Tasarkhai Sand Dunes in the Khugnu Khan National Park, just like a gateway of the Gobi Desert. It is a magnificent place to create portraits of wildlife landscape photography. Further, explore the lovely sand dunes named Elsen Tasarkhai and hike in the beautiful mountains surrounding this place. No matter the time of day, the beautiful and ever-changing scene of this majestic sand dune Elsen Tasarkhai will be full of wildlife, energy, and motion. (B/L/D)

DAY 11.Back to Ulaanbaatar

Head back to Ulaanbaatar. Transfer to the hotel and relax. Option to go shopping for souvenirs and cashmere products. Cultural performance in the evening. (B/L/D)

DAY 12.Departure Day

Transfer to Chingis Khaan International Airport or Train station and depart Mongolia. (B)

Should I book pre/post tour accommodation?

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts.
